They also make fantastic table centre piece surrounded by flowers for a birthday child, or could be a tooth fairy to celebrate your child losing their first tooth. You can also choose a little wooden number for the fairy to hold if giving for a birthday to make your fairy present extra personal.

I am not a fan of plastic dolls and much prefer something soft to cuddle, so have always steered clear of the rigid pink 'babies' in shops. However I have found it quite difficult to find cloth dolls and particularly hard to find any sort of ethnic variation - nearly all dolls seem to be white. The first dolls I made for my girls were an oriental and a black doll and I think it is important to offer as wide a range of skin tones as possible to reflect our society.

Waldorf Dolls are made with natural materials such as cotton and sheeps wool which easily absorbs the heat of the child's body so that they become warm like a real baby. The faces are very simple so that the child can project their own feelings onto the doll. For instance it is harder to imagine a crying doll if the face is already smiling.
